In a world filled with pain
I’ve had my share
and yet
the people who’ve had much more
always seem to find me
I’m not sure why
or how
but they always come to me
and I don’t mind no more.
Do you know how hard it is to bear another’s burden?
Of course you do
Do you ever feel another’s pain?
I hope so.
When the light goes out
and the room goes dark
and you look outside
only to find
the sun has died
or been eclipsed
(but you can’t tell which)
When the air is sucked
strait from your heaving lungs
and your sweat stings your eyes
and the room begins to spin–
then perhaps it is time
to be the friend
that you always wished you had,
to be that friend
to someone else.
Awesome piece. I had a friend like that in high school. Took us 20 years to find each other again, but it has been so wonderful this past month + we’ve discovered it truly was and is a life-long friendship. 🙂
I’m so glad you were reunited.
🙂
beautiful.
Thank you.
Isn’t this the truth? So glad you wrote this. Being an absent friend has been a trademark of mine. Disappearing when it gets too cold….or too hot….or too fucking complicated. Sigh.
Many things in life are hard… but we all need friends.
Excellent message, and poem. Recently I’d been praying for a friend who’d mentioned she’d been having much “grief”, including terrible nightmares. She didn’t indicate the subject/plot of the dreams–nonetheless, I found myself having “sympathetic” nightmares for a couple nights. It was very strange–and I could only explain it as evidence of helping to bear her burdens in a very real and disheartening way.
Well here’s to both of you getting through.
This is beautiful. Be a candle…
Thank you for saying so.
So true and so touching. Being a friend is hard and challenging taking on other’s problems but somehow that old song, “He Ain’t Heavy, He’s my Brother” comes to mind. Don’t worry, none of my kids knew this song until I introduced it to them. The concept is the point.
Not to worry, I don’t know that song.
